“We are new to town and I was looking for a dentist for my family. We live right near this office and walk by it daily when on the walking trail. I called to get my family in for our yearly 6 month cleanings. From the moment we stepped in that door to the second we left, we felt heard, safe and taken care of. Their office is clean top to bottom, the staff are literal angels and you can’t beat those office window views that will cure any dental anxiety you may have. Karlee was an absolute gem when it came to my cleaning, I am not an easy dental patient. I have sensitivity, anxiety and just overall horrible past dental experiences. She took care of me, offered me a menu for any comfort items I may need and I couldn’t thank her enough for that. I would recommend asking for her if you also have anxiety and need someone who slows down to listen and takes it easy. Dr. Dillard is who saw me after Karlee did my cleaning. I absolutely adore Dr Dillard, she is also a gem and gave me answers to all of the issues I was having. I am so thankful we found advanced dental and they are now stuck with us as patients until we move, if we ever do. Thank you Advanced Dental Team, your help and care was much appreciated.”

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends scheduling your child's first dental visit by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth erupting. Early visits allow pediatric dentists to assess oral development, discuss proper cleaning techniques, address feeding habits that affect teeth, and establish a dental home before problems arise. Several Twin Falls practices like Smiles 4 Kids and Summit Kids Dental specifically emphasize infant care and preventive dentistry from the earliest ages, making these visits comfortable and educational for parents.
Pediatric dentists complete 2-3 additional years of specialized training after dental school, focusing exclusively on children's dental development, behavior management, and treating young patients from infancy through adolescence. They're trained in child psychology, growth and development, and handling special needs patients. Family dentists treat patients of all ages with general training. In Twin Falls, practices like Smith Pediatric Dentistry and Children's Dentistry are pediatric specialists, while Advanced Dental Care and Green Acres are family practices treating both children and adults. For complex pediatric cases, anxious children, or very young patients, specialists often provide more tailored care environments.
Most pediatric dentists recommend children visit every six months for routine cleanings and exams, which is the standard for maintaining optimal oral health and catching problems early. However, some children may need more frequent visits if they're at higher risk for cavities, have orthodontic appliances, or are undergoing specific treatments. These regular visits allow dentists to monitor tooth eruption patterns, apply fluoride treatments and sealants, reinforce good hygiene habits, and adjust care as children grow. Starting these visits early and maintaining consistency helps children develop positive attitudes toward dental care that last into adulthood.
Yes, pediatric dentists typically treat patients from infancy through adolescence, generally up to age 18 or until the patient transitions to an adult dentist. Many teenagers prefer continuing with their pediatric dentist because of the established relationship and comfort level. Pediatric practices understand the unique dental challenges teenagers face, including wisdom teeth development, orthodontic needs, sports-related injuries, and managing oral hygiene with braces. Several Twin Falls practices like Smith Pediatric Dentistry explicitly serve patients ages 0-18, while Smiles 4 Kids mentions supporting teenagers transitioning to adult dental care.
Dental sealants are thin protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth (molars) to prevent cavities. They're particularly effective for children because molars have deep grooves that trap food and bacteria, making them difficult to clean thoroughly with brushing alone. The application is quick, painless, and can last several years. Most pediatric dentists recommend sealants for children once their permanent molars come in, typically around ages 6 and 12. Sealants are especially beneficial for children prone to cavities or those still developing proper brushing techniques. Many Twin Falls practices emphasize preventive care including sealants as part of comprehensive pediatric dental services.
Start by talking positively about the dentist using simple, age-appropriate language, avoiding words like 'pain' or 'hurt' and instead focusing on the dentist 'counting teeth' or 'making teeth strong.' Read children's books about dental visits, and consider scheduling a brief office tour beforehand if the practice allows. Choose a time when your child is typically well-rested and cooperative. Many Twin Falls pediatric practices like Smith Pediatric Dentistry and Alligator Pediatric Dentistry create fun, child-friendly environments specifically designed to make first visits enjoyable. Bring comfort items if needed, stay calm yourself (children pick up on parental anxiety), and trust the pediatric dentist's experience in working with nervous children.
For dental emergencies like knocked-out teeth, severe pain, or facial trauma, contact your pediatric dentist immediately—many practices have emergency protocols and after-hours contacts. For a knocked-out permanent tooth, handle it by the crown (not root), rinse gently if dirty, and try to reinsert it or keep it in milk while heading to the dentist within 30 minutes if possible. For baby teeth, don't attempt reinsertion. For severe pain, rinse with warm water and apply a cold compress. Several Twin Falls practices including Green Acres Family Dentistry and Clearwater Dentistry specifically mention emergency dental services, so establish a dental home before emergencies arise.
Yes, pediatric dental X-rays are very safe and use extremely low radiation doses, especially with modern digital X-ray technology that reduces exposure by up to 80% compared to traditional film. Pediatric dentists follow the ALARA principle (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) and only take X-rays when diagnostically necessary. Children receive additional protection through lead aprons and thyroid collars. X-rays are essential for detecting cavities between teeth, monitoring tooth development, checking for impacted teeth, and planning orthodontic treatment—problems that aren't visible during clinical exams. The diagnostic benefits far outweigh the minimal radiation exposure, which is comparable to normal daily environmental radiation.
Fluoride treatments are highly recommended for children as they significantly strengthen tooth enamel and prevent cavities, especially in developing teeth. Professional fluoride applications provide concentrated protection beyond what toothpaste and water offer. They're particularly beneficial for children at higher risk for cavities, those with a history of dental problems, or communities without fluoridated water. The treatment is quick, painless, and typically applied every six months during routine visits. Most pediatric dentists in Twin Falls incorporate fluoride treatments into preventive care protocols. While generally safe and effective, your pediatric dentist will assess your child's individual needs and fluoride exposure from other sources to determine the appropriate treatment frequency.
