    About Rockbridge Area Health Center

Rockbridge Area Health Center (RAHC) is a non-profit federally qualified health center founded to bridge healthcare gaps in the Rockbridge County area. With locations in Lexington and Buena Vista, plus two school-based health centers and mobile units, RAHC brings comprehensive care directly to communities that need it most. The center operates as a Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH), meaning care is coordinated across a team of providers to ensure patients receive holistic, continuous treatment rather than fragmented services.

RAHC offers primary medical care, dental services for the whole family, and fully integrated behavioral health services all under one roof. The medical team provides sick visits, chronic disease management including a new Diabetes Self-Management Education program, preventive care, immunizations, and treatment for minor injuries. The dental department serves patients at every stage of life with recently upgraded digital imaging technology for more accurate diagnoses. Behavioral health services range from counseling and therapy to medication management for both children and adults, making RAHC one of the few health centers in the region to offer truly integrated care.

What sets RAHC apart is its commitment to accessibility — no one is turned away due to inability to pay. The center accepts insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, and offers an income-based sliding fee discount program even for patients with insurance. RAHC's mobile units travel throughout Rockbridge County bringing medical and dental care to neighborhoods with limited transportation options, and the new school-based clinics ensure students can access care without missing excessive school time or burdening parents with transportation challenges.

RAHC has earned national recognition for its quality outcomes, ranking in the top 30% of all HRSA-supported health centers in 2023 and the top 20% in 2022, 2021, and 2018. The center holds multiple HRSA badges including Health Center Quality Leader, High Value Care, National Quality Leader for Heart Health, Improving Health Care Access, and Advancing Health Information Technology for Quality. With a 4.7-star rating from over 200 Google reviews, patients consistently praise the center's compassionate staff, affordable care, and comprehensive services that address medical, dental, and mental health needs in one trusted location.

They also offer specialized programs like Diabetes Self-Management Education and medication assistance.

Do I need insurance to be seen at RAHC, and how much does it cost?

No insurance is required. RAHC accepts all insurance plans including Medicaid and Medicare, and offers an income-based sliding fee discount program for uninsured patients and even those with insurance based on household size and income. The sliding fee program ensures affordable care regardless of ability to pay. Contact Patient Financial Services at (540) 464-8700 to learn about eligibility and pricing specific to your situation.

Who provides care at RAHC and what are their qualifications?

RAHC operates as a Patient-Centered Medical Home with a team of board-certified physicians, nurse practitioners, dentists, dental hygienists, licensed clinical social workers, and licensed professional counselors. Dr. Michael Henry, COL (ret), serves as Medical Director. The center has earned HRSA Health Center Quality Leader recognition, ranking in the top 30% of all federally qualified health centers nationally for clinical outcomes, demonstrating high provider expertise and care quality.

What should I expect on my first visit to RAHC?

New patients will complete registration and provide insurance information or discuss sliding fee discount eligibility with Patient Financial Services. For medical appointments, you'll meet with a care team that may include a physician, nurse practitioner, and care coordinator who will review your medical history, current concerns, and create a comprehensive care plan. The team-based approach means your medical, dental, and behavioral health needs can be coordinated in one place. Bring any current medications, insurance cards, and a list of health concerns you'd like to address.

How do I schedule an appointment at RAHC?

Established patients can schedule sick visits and follow-up medical appointments online at rockahc.org for the Northridge Lane location in Lexington. For dental appointments, behavioral health appointments, or if you're a new patient, call (540) 464-8700. If you're experiencing emergency symptoms (chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe headache, suicidal thoughts, loss of consciousness, seizures, blood sugar below 70 or above 400, allergic reactions with swelling), do not use online scheduling — call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Does RAHC offer care outside their main offices?

Yes. RAHC operates mobile medical and dental units that travel throughout Rockbridge County bringing care directly to underserved neighborhoods. They also run two school-based health centers that provide on-site care for students, eliminating transportation barriers and reducing missed school time. Contact the center to learn when mobile units will be in your area.

What makes RAHC different from other health centers in the area?

RAHC is one of the few federally qualified health centers in the region offering fully integrated medical, dental, and behavioral health services under one roof with coordinated care teams. They're nationally recognized for quality (top 30% of all HRSA health centers for clinical outcomes), accept everyone regardless of insurance status with sliding fee discounts, and bring care to underserved communities via mobile units and school-based clinics. They also offer specialized programs like Diabetes Self-Management Education and advanced dental imaging technology.

Who is RAHC best suited for?

RAHC serves the entire community — families needing comprehensive care from pediatrics to geriatrics, uninsured or underinsured individuals who need affordable access to medical and dental care, patients with chronic conditions like diabetes or heart disease who benefit from coordinated care teams, children and adults needing behavioral health services integrated with their medical care, and anyone in Rockbridge County who values high-quality, patient-centered care regardless of ability to pay.

    What Customers Love

Dr Tran is hands down the best pediatrician! She has the best team of nurses and they are always so friendly and helpful. They are always able to work us in for last minute appointments when needed and their after hours line is amazing! We’ve been seeing them for over 3 years now. Highly recommend!

    Shannon Vest, Google Review

We have been going here for a year now and love it. All 4 of my children 11, 6, 4 and newborn) see Dr. Tran and she has been wonderful and listens to your concerns. We also love seeing PA Stillwell and Dr. Henry. They both are also great and thorough! I love that this place offers dental and behavioral therapy as well. We haven't used those services but it's nice to know I can go to them for it all in one place. Setting up appointments is real easy. I just send a text message and they get back to me ASAP. I'm usually able to have my kids be seen that very day.

    Stephanie Broomfield, Google Review

Been going here a couple of years now and love it. Clean facilities, super friendly (and patient) front of office staff, flexible scheduling, great medical and behavioral staff. I receive primary, behavioral, and dietary care all in one place.

    Chris Reid, Google Review

RAHC has been such a blessing. They are close to home and have knowledgeable healthcare professionals that provide compassionate care. I recently had a dental issue and they even worked me in on the same day!!

    Dawn Traylor, Google Review

My experience there was just like all the others. I have very little wait time, everyone is very professional, the doctor listens, explains fully and gives me what I need to move forward and recover. No complaints!
