Comprehensive Behavioral Health is a full-service psychiatric practice in Staunton, Virginia, dedicated to helping individuals restore mental wellness and 'Get Back to You.' Serving Fishersville, Staunton, and the surrounding Central Virginia region, the practice provides evidence-based mental health care for adults struggling with depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, ADHD, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and substance abuse. Their team of board-certified psychiatrists and mental health professionals partners with patients to navigate life's challenges through personalized, therapeutic approaches.
The practice specializes in advanced treatments for depression, including FDA-cleared NeuroStar TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) Therapy — a non-invasive, outpatient treatment for patients who haven't responded adequately to antidepressants. They also offer Spravato (esketamine) treatment, another cutting-edge option for treatment-resistant depression. TMS Therapy uses short pulses of magnetic fields to stimulate underactive areas of the brain associated with depression, with a typical initial course of 19-37 minutes daily over 4-6 weeks. This technology, similar to an MRI machine, has helped thousands of patients achieve relief without medication side effects.
Beyond advanced treatments, Comprehensive Behavioral Health provides comprehensive psychiatric services including psychiatric evaluations, medication management, supportive therapy, and nutrition services to address the whole-person wellness. They understand that mental health care should be accessible, offering both in-office appointments at their Staunton location and secure telehealth visits for patients who prefer to receive care from home. With a 4.6-star rating from 749 Google reviews, patients consistently praise the caring staff, clear explanations of treatment options, and ease of accessing online forms and scheduling.
The practice is open Monday through Thursday from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with telehealth-only services available on Fridays. Whether you're seeking help for a new diagnosis, haven't found relief with traditional treatments, or need ongoing medication management and support, Comprehensive Behavioral Health offers the latest evidence-based mental health services in a compassionate, personalized environment. Their goal is simple: to partner with you on the road to mental health wellness and help you feel like yourself again.

What qualifications do the psychiatrists at Comprehensive Behavioral Health have?
The practice is staffed by board-certified psychiatrists and mental health professionals with specialized training in treating depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, ADHD, bipolar disorder, and substance abuse. They are certified providers of NeuroStar TMS Therapy and Spravato (esketamine) treatment — advanced therapies that require specific training and FDA clearance to administer.
What should I expect during my first psychiatric evaluation?
Your initial psychiatric evaluation will involve a comprehensive assessment of your mental health history, current symptoms, medications, lifestyle factors, and treatment goals. The psychiatrist will work with you to understand your unique situation and develop a personalized treatment plan, which may include medication management, therapy referrals, TMS Therapy, Spravato treatment, or nutrition services. You can complete intake forms online before your visit through the patient portal.
How much does treatment cost, and do you accept insurance?
Costs vary depending on the service (psychiatric evaluation, medication management visit, TMS Therapy course, Spravato treatment). The practice works with many insurance plans. It's best to contact their office at (540) 688-2646 to verify your specific insurance coverage and discuss any out-of-pocket costs before your first visit.
Who is a good candidate for TMS Therapy or Spravato treatment?
TMS Therapy and Spravato are typically recommended for patients with treatment-resistant depression — those who haven't achieved adequate relief from antidepressants. TMS is non-invasive and medication-free, making it ideal for patients who can't tolerate medication side effects. Spravato is for adults with treatment-resistant depression or major depressive disorder with acute suicidal ideation. Your psychiatrist will evaluate whether you're a candidate during your consultation.
Do you offer telehealth appointments, and how do I book one?
Yes, Comprehensive Behavioral Health offers secure telehealth appointments for psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and follow-up visits. You can request a telehealth appointment through their website, or call (540) 688-2646. Detailed telemed instructions are provided to help you prepare for your virtual visit.
What conditions do you treat?
The practice treats a wide range of mental health conditions including depression, anxiety disorders (generalized anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorder, phobias, agoraphobia), PTSD, OCD, body dysmorphic disorder, ADHD, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, eating disorders, insomnia, grief, anger, hoarding, trichotillomania, and substance abuse/addiction. They specialize in treatment-resistant depression and offer advanced therapies like TMS and Spravato.
How long does a TMS Therapy treatment course take?
The typical initial course of NeuroStar TMS Therapy involves daily sessions of 19-37 minutes, Monday through Friday, over 4-6 weeks. Each session is outpatient and non-invasive — you remain awake and alert during treatment and can return to normal activities immediately afterward. Your psychiatrist will determine the exact treatment protocol based on your individual response.
Can I continue seeing my primary care doctor or therapist while being treated here?
Absolutely. Comprehensive Behavioral Health encourages collaboration with your existing care team. They provide psychiatric services (medication management, TMS, Spravato) and can refer you to therapists for supportive therapy if needed. They also accept referrals from primary care physicians, therapists, and other providers — you can use their 'Refer A Patient' portal on the website.

“John Carter”Jason” is excellent at his job. I was very nervous meeting him for the first time and knowing that my medication’s were gonna be changed. He walked Me through the process while making sure that I was comfortable the entire time. He earned my trust and I’ve since recommended friends and family to go see him as well. I don’t know where I’d be without him right now.”

“Was looking up my current behavioral health clinics number, and saw this lovely place again. Was very shocked to see the rating. I went in 2021 I do believe. I've been to too many kinds of and different Drs and PA's over the past 17 years nothing really surprises me unless the provider actually listens. I had a weird vibe here, went half a year and didn't feel who I was seeing was right for me, I had the option of seeing another provider there, I get weird on that. But the 4.6 rating, WOW. I thought maybe things have changed. But in scrolling through comments I can see the same problems still exist. I'm sure there are good providers in there, it's a game of lucky chairs. The main thing for you as a patient, especially in mental health and dealing with brain issues, find who you are comfortable with and you feel is listening to you. You've come to a point where you've decided to get some help. Don't let one place, person, or thing stop you from trying. I can't say I recommend this facility, I can't say I don't. What I learned was, don't let one thing keep you from trying. After my visits I got tired of trying, so I quit and tried to deal with it with my PCP. I was put into a position where I had to go somewhere this year. And I'm grateful I had too. The provider I'm seeing now listens, and doesn't see me as a #, but a mind they would like to help recover and move forward with life. It's not easy and it does require communication, thoughtfulness, and an open mind from both parties to start. Anyone who reads this, stay on the journey! If you don't feel comfortable with who you are seeing, seek someone else. I've tried at times and felt it would all be the same. It's not like that. Have faith that one will be in your path that listens and properly diagnoses you, and you both try to make yourself a better person and mentally at ease with what bothers you. The tunnel your mind goes through can be very dark and seem endless. If your put in the right place and get that one provider that listens and you like..... And you are willing to try yourself. Flashes of light start to appear, the tunnel doesn't seem so dark anymore. You may be six months, a year, or longer until you reach a place where you can see that there is an end to that tunnel. I'm not there yet, but I see flashes of light and that provides Hope!!!! Keep trying and find the person that listens. You may have to go to five clinics. Keep moving forward in getting healthy! This really isn't a negative review. This facility wasn't the right place for me with what I was going through, and I didn't get paired with one who related to my issues. If you feel that way anywhere, go somewhere else. You won't hurt anyone's feelings. Just keep trying. To all those that are battling, keep up the good faith that your mind will heal, to a point you can deal with it, in time. And it's not your fault, and you're not crazy because you need a little help. Takes a village. 🤟”
