The practice is led by Dr. Zachary Dodson and Dr. Austin Price, both board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons who completed extensive training beyond dental school, including hospital-based surgical residencies. Their expertise spans the full spectrum of oral surgery, from wisdom teeth removal and dental implant placement to corrective jaw surgery and facial trauma reconstruction.

The practice is equipped with advanced diagnostic and surgical technology, including 3D imaging and cone beam CT scanning that allows for precise surgical planning. They offer multiple anesthesia options including local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, IV sedation, and general anesthesia, all administered by their trained surgical team in a fully accredited surgical facility. This flexibility ensures patients can receive the level of comfort and sedation that's right for their procedure and anxiety level.

What sets Blue Ridge Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery apart is their comprehensive approach to complex cases. Beyond routine extractions, they specialize in dental implant placement (including full-arch reconstruction), bone grafting for implant site development, treatment of TMJ disorders, surgical management of sleep apnea, and facial cosmetic procedures. They work closely with referring dentists throughout the region to provide coordinated care, and their surgeons are on staff at local hospitals for cases requiring operating room facilities.

Patient experience is central to their practice philosophy. Frequently Asked Questions

What are Dr. Dodson and Dr. Price's qualifications?

Both surgeons are board-certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the specialty's highest credential. They completed dental school followed by 4-6 years of hospital-based surgical residency training, which includes extensive experience in anesthesia, trauma surgery, and complex reconstructive procedures. They are credentialed to perform surgery at local hospitals and maintain privileges for cases requiring operating room facilities.

How much do common procedures cost?

Costs vary based on procedure complexity and insurance coverage. Wisdom teeth removal typically ranges from $200-$600 per tooth depending on impaction level. Single dental implants generally range from $3,000-$5,000 including the implant, abutment, and crown. The office provides detailed cost estimates during consultation and works with most dental insurance plans. They also offer payment plans and financing through CareCredit for out-of-pocket expenses.

What sedation options are available and which should I choose?

The practice offers four levels: local anesthesia only (numbing), nitrous oxide (laughing gas) with local anesthesia, IV sedation (twilight sleep), and general anesthesia (fully asleep). For simple extractions, local or nitrous oxide is often sufficient. Wisdom teeth removal typically uses IV sedation or general anesthesia for comfort. Complex implant surgery or jaw procedures often use general anesthesia. Your surgeon will recommend the appropriate option based on the procedure, your anxiety level, and medical history during your consultation.

What should I expect for a wisdom teeth removal procedure?

You'll have a consultation first where the surgeon reviews your X-rays, discusses sedation options, and answers questions. On surgery day, you'll arrive with a responsible adult to drive you home. After sedation is administered, the procedure typically takes 30-60 minutes for all four teeth. You'll rest in recovery for 30-45 minutes until alert enough to go home. Most patients experience swelling and discomfort for 3-5 days, manageable with prescribed pain medication and ice. Full healing takes 1-2 weeks, and you'll have a follow-up visit to ensure proper healing.

Do you place the implant and the crown, or just the implant?

The oral surgeons place the dental implant (the titanium post in the bone) and perform any necessary bone grafting or sinus lifts. After the implant integrates with your bone (typically 3-6 months), you return to your regular dentist for the crown (the visible tooth). This collaborative approach combines the surgeon's specialty in bone work and implant placement with your dentist's expertise in restorative dentistry. The practice coordinates closely with referring dentists to ensure seamless care.

How do I schedule a consultation?

Call the office at (540) 886-2956 to schedule. Most consultations are referred by your general dentist, who will send X-rays and records ahead of time. If you don't have a referring dentist, you can still call directly — the office will guide you on what records are needed. Consultations typically last 30-45 minutes and include a clinical exam, review of imaging, discussion of treatment options, and cost estimate. Many patients can schedule their procedure the same day if they choose to move forward.

Who is a good candidate for dental implants?

Good candidates have adequate bone density to support the implant, healthy gums, and good overall health. The surgeons can often place implants in patients who've been told they don't have enough bone by using bone grafting or sinus lift procedures. Patients with diabetes, osteoporosis, or who smoke may still be candidates but require additional evaluation. Implants are ideal for patients missing one or more teeth who want a permanent solution rather than dentures or bridges. Age is not a limiting factor — both young adults and seniors can be candidates.

Do you treat TMJ disorders and sleep apnea?

Yes. For TMJ disorders, treatment options range from conservative approaches (medication, physical therapy, splint therapy) to surgical intervention for severe cases (arthroscopy or joint replacement). For obstructive sleep apnea, the surgeons can perform orthognathic (jaw) surgery to reposition the jaws and enlarge the airway in patients who cannot tolerate CPAP or have failed other treatments. Both conditions require thorough evaluation including imaging studies to determine if surgery is appropriate.

    What Customers Love

Wonderful experience from the consultation to the follow up call that afternoon! My daughter had her wisdom teeth removed by Dr Brandt. The assistant was kind, knowledgeable, and calm (it helped my mama nerves) when she greeted us and explained the steps of the procedure. Dr Brandt came in and spoke to us prior to taking my daughter back to start the anesthesia. He was very personable and shared what we could expect immediately following the surgery. When he was done, we pulled our car around and let us know how the procedure went. Post operative instructions were explained thoroughly and we were given written copies to reference. My daughter followed all instructions to the “t” and had very little swelling or bruising. Overall an amazing experience for me and her.

Things went smoothly from start to finish. I would recommend anyone in need of oral surgery to contact this highly skilled group of doctors. Christopher Foote God Bless ❤️

Getting my appointment was easy and fast. I had been dealing with my wisdom tooth pain for a while and after my consultation, they got me in to get them removed about 3 weeks later! The staff at the front and the staff doing my surgery were so sweet and made me feel less anxious. Very thankful I came to this place! Thank you all a thousand times!

My dentist referred me to Blue Ridge Maxillofacial & Oral Surgery and recommended that I see Dr. Brandt for a possible procedure I was wanting performed. I enjoyed my consultation with Dr. Brandt. Both he and his nurse/assistant were very friendly and personable. He explained everything well and told me he will be reviewing my panorex in consultation with a radiologist to determine if I will be a good candidate for the given procedure I am wishing to have performed and that his assistant will be contacting me next week with the results of that consultation, in order to inform me if I would or would not be a good candidate for the given procedure, as well as possible treatment options. Overall, I was very pleased and would recommend this place if you need treatment.

My daughter had an appointment with Blue Ridge Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery for her wisdom teeth removal and we were both so nervous going in... but everyone in the office was so nice and answered all of my questions about what to expect during and after her surgery. Everything went well and I was so happy to find out they have an after hours phone number that I could call incase I had any questions or concerns. My daughter also mentioned a few times afterwards about how nice the nurse/assistant was (I wish I could remember her name) -but everyone really was so kind.
