    About Birdwood Golf Course

Birdwood Golf Course opened as one of Virginia's premier golf destinations, designed by legendary PGA Professional Davis Love III and Love Golf Design. The championship course has earned top rankings from Golf Magazine (#7 in Virginia) and Golf Digest ("Best In State"), and serves as the home course for the University of Virginia men's and women's golf programs. Located on 410 Golf Course Drive in Charlottesville, the facility spans more than 200 acres of rolling landscape and is part of the Boar's Head Resort complex, offering both membership programs and daily public play.

The championship course is a par-71 layout measuring 3,856 to 7,116 yards with six sets of tees to accommodate all skill levels. The course features bentgrass greens — the premier putting surface for the region — zoysia grass fairways known for lush resilience, and Bermuda grass tee boxes for quick divot recovery. The rough uses a mixture of fescue and bluegrasses, while native areas feature fine fescue Irish links mix for an environmentally friendly links-style appearance. Birdwood holds Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary certification, demonstrating a commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable golf course management.

Beyond the championship course, Birdwood offers The Nest par-3 course — a six-hole "approach course" designed by Davis Love III that totals 61 to 135 yards per hole and can be played in under an hour, making it ideal for lunch breaks, late afternoon rounds, or beginners learning the game. The Ridges putting course is a 31,000 square foot practice paradise featuring 18 holes with slopes and ridgelines that mimic the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains, located directly behind the clubhouse and complimentary to guests who make food or beverage purchases at Birdwood Bar and Grill. A dedicated practice area with bunkers and chipping greens is available exclusively for members and hotel guests.

Birdwood Golf has been recognized by Golf Digest, Golf Magazine, and Golfweek as one of Virginia's best courses and top resort courses. Players can book tee times for daily play or take advantage of Stay & Play packages that combine championship golf with accommodations and amenities at Boar's Head Resort, including access to The Mill Room Restaurant and spa services. Whether you're a serious golfer looking for a championship challenge, a beginner wanting to learn on The Nest, or a visitor seeking a quick practice session on Ridges, Birdwood offers a complete golf experience in the heart of Charlottesville wine country.

Best for: Serious golfers seeking championship play, resort guests at Boar's Head, golfers with limited time for a quick round, beginners developing their short game

Service area: Charlottesville, Virginia and surrounding areas

Why choose Birdwood Golf Course: Birdwood stands out as the only Davis Love III-designed course in the Charlottesville area and the only facility offering three distinct golf experiences (championship, par-3, and putting course) in one location. As the home course for UVA golf and an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, it offers championship-level conditions and environmental stewardship that most daily-fee courses in the region cannot match.

What Makes Birdwood Golf Course Different

    What Customers Love

I cannot say enough about this place. Go golf in October if you can! The views are one of a kind, in my biased opinion. The course is in great shape, and this is the only place my dad wants to play when he visits. Watch the view of my dad on the practice putting green, that's how tight they can be.

Although we played the course in the winter and conditions were a bit on the brown side the layout was exceptional and the improvements that they put in the course appear to be money well spent. The staff in the clubhouse was phenomenal. Everybody was very nice and the menu was decent for a Golf Clubhouse. In case you didn't realize it, this is the UVA's golf team home course. Rates are reasonable for what you get the golf carts are all brand new and have some great GPS yardage technology in them. All of the gentleman that played were walking. I would not recommend it, but they made it look easy.

While on vacation my husband invited me to watch him play. The entire staff was accommodating and beyond welcoming. There was a gentleman who explained some of the course to us, so my husband knew what he was up against. We were paired with a member who could not have been cooler. He explained every hole in great detail including undulation and blind spots. He also made lots of recommendations on places to visit.
