What Are Neurotoxins?

Neurotoxins (commonly known by brand names like Botox) are injectable treatments that temporarily relax targeted facial muscles to smooth wrinkles and fine lines. They work by blocking nerve signals to specific muscles, preventing the muscle from contracting and creating wrinkles.

The most common treatment areas are the "11 lines" between the brows (glabellar lines), horizontal forehead lines, and crow's feet around the eyes. Neurotoxins can also be used therapeutically for conditions like TMJ, migraines, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), and neck spasms.

How Neurotoxins Work

When you make facial expressions — frowning, squinting, raising your eyebrows — the underlying muscles contract and create creases in the skin above them. Over time, these creases become etched into the skin as permanent lines. Neurotoxin injections temporarily prevent these muscles from contracting fully, which smooths existing lines and prevents new ones from forming.

Results typically appear within 3–7 days and last approximately 3 months, though this varies by product and individual. Neurotoxins are one of the most studied and well-established cosmetic procedures worldwide.

Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA): The most widely known and longest-established neurotoxin. FDA-approved for cosmetic use since 2002.

Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA): Known for spreading slightly more than Botox, which can be advantageous for treating larger areas like the forehead. Some patients find it kicks in slightly faster.

Daxxify (daxibotulinumtoxinA): The newest FDA-approved neurotoxin, notable for its longer duration — studies show results lasting up to 6 months for some patients.
