The Shenandoah Valley Migrant Education Program (SVMEP) is a federally funded Title I, Part C program hosted at James Madison University that provides comprehensive academic support and advocacy services to newly arrived migrant families in the Harrisonburg area. The program offers tutoring, mentoring, interpretation services, school enrollment assistance, and parent involvement support to migrant students and young adults during their first three years in the community. SVMEP's bilingual staff and trained volunteer tutors work directly with families in their homes and migrant camps to help students achieve educational goals, earn high school diplomas, or complete GED programs that prepare them for further learning and employment.
Ideal for: Newly arrived migrant families, seasonal agricultural workers' children, students needing bilingual academic support, families seeking school enrollment assistance and community resources
Service area: Shenandoah Valley, Harrisonburg, Virginia and surrounding areas
Home and Camp-Based Services: SVMEP staff visit families directly in their homes and migrant camps to assess needs and provide personalized support, rather than requiring families to travel to a central location.
Bilingual Specialists: The program employs four full-time bilingual (Spanish/English) Migrant Educational Specialists who provide culturally responsive support and interpretation services.
Comprehensive Support Network: Beyond tutoring, SVMEP assists with school enrollment, parent involvement, community resource access, and mentoring to address barriers faced by migrant families.
