    Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can I get an appointment at Kentucky Counseling Center?

The majority of new patients are able to schedule their first appointment and see a provider within the same week. With over 100 mental health professionals on staff, Kentucky Counseling Center maintains much shorter wait times than typical practices. During your initial contact, the scheduling team will work to match you with an available therapist or psychiatric provider who fits your needs and can see you quickly.

What does a first therapy appointment involve?

Your first appointment (intake session) typically lasts 50-60 minutes. The therapist will ask about what brought you to counseling, your current symptoms or concerns, relevant personal and family history, and your goals for therapy. This is also your chance to ask questions and determine if the therapist is a good fit. After the intake, you and your therapist will develop a treatment plan and schedule regular sessions. First appointments can be conducted in-person at the Louisville or Lexington offices, or via secure video telehealth anywhere in Kentucky.

Do you accept my insurance, and what are the costs?

Kentucky Counseling Center accepts most major insurance plans including Aetna, Anthem, Caresource, Cigna, Humana, United Healthcare, Optum, Tricare, Medicaid, and Medicare, among others. Your out-of-pocket cost will depend on your specific plan's copay, deductible, and coverage terms. The billing team verifies insurance benefits before your first appointment and explains any patient responsibility. For patients without insurance, Kentucky Counseling Center offers affordable self-pay rates and convenient payment plans. You can ask about your specific plan via live chat on their website or when you call to schedule.

What types of therapy and mental health services do you offer?

Kentucky Counseling Center provides individual therapy for children, teens, and adults; couples counseling; family therapy; and group therapy. Psychiatric nurse practitioners and family nurse practitioners offer medication management for patients who need psychiatric medications. For Medicaid recipients with qualifying mental health diagnoses, case managers help connect patients with employment, housing, education, and health resources in the community. Therapists specialize in treating anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, behavioral challenges, ADHD, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and other mental health conditions.

How does telehealth therapy work, and is it as effective as in-person?

Telehealth therapy at Kentucky Counseling Center is conducted through secure, HIPAA-compliant video sessions. You connect with your Kentucky-licensed therapist using any internet-connected device — smartphone, tablet, or computer. Sessions are scheduled just like in-person appointments, and you meet with the same therapist each time from the comfort of your home. Research shows telehealth therapy is equally effective as in-person therapy for most mental health conditions, and many patients find it more convenient because it eliminates travel time and transportation barriers. Telehealth is available to Kentucky residents statewide.

What are the qualifications of your therapists and psychiatric providers?

All therapists and counselors at Kentucky Counseling Center are licensed mental health professionals in Kentucky, including Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW), Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors (LPCC), and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT). Psychiatric providers are Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNP) and experienced Family Nurse Practitioners with specialized training in mental health medication management. The practice was founded and is owned by counselors, ensuring clinical expertise guides all patient care decisions.

Do you see children and teenagers, or only adults?

Kentucky Counseling Center provides therapy for all age groups — children, teens, and adults. Many therapists specialize in child and adolescent therapy, addressing issues like behavioral problems, school stress, anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, and family conflict. Parents are typically involved in the treatment planning for younger children. Teens can receive individual therapy and, when appropriate, family therapy to improve communication and relationships at home. Psychiatric providers also offer medication management for children and teens when clinically indicated.

How do I schedule my first appointment?

You can request an appointment online at kentuckycounselingcenter.com by filling out the new client form, or call (855) 591-0092 to speak with the scheduling team. They'll ask about your insurance, the type of services you're seeking (therapy, psychiatry, or both), and whether you prefer in-person or telehealth appointments. The team will match you with an available provider who specializes in your needs and can typically get you scheduled within the same week. If you have questions about insurance, services, or the process, you can also use the live chat feature on their website.

    What Customers Love

They scheduled my daughter to get into an appointment this morning at 7am. Obviously with such an early appointment we went to bed at a decent time. Got up, ready, drove down to the appointment only for the office to be locked and lights off. I just happen to check my email when we got back into the car and the therapist had sent an email at 9:15 at night saying “I have to reschedule sorry for any inconvenience”. Couldn’t even care to call and make sure we knew since they were emailing so last minute and late at night. Really giving this place a bad look.

I do not recommend this practice. You have to jump through a bunch of different hoops to get an appointment, which is two weeks out, then the day before, they will call and cancel and try to reschedule another appointment for, you guessed it, two weeks out. I'm trying to find a good therapist for my kid, she needs help, I don't have the luxury of being able to wait in chunks of 2-week increments for them to jerk me around with bad management, poor scheduling and lacking communication.

    Jeremy Reed, Google Review

Unfortunately i do not recommended counseling now for several reasons. First, their communication skills are lacking, too many different people handling things and in turn things get messed up. It has been such a huge headache dealing with this company just trying to even get an appointment complete. I have had my intake appointment rescheduled 3 different times due to lack of communication, rescheduling me without verifying the new time and date worked, and now after my intake my next appointment was never even scheduled like they said it was. Highly irritating and unprofessional. When dealing with someone whose mental heath is fragile this is not the way to do it! Would not recommend.

This is review is not about my therapist. She is amazing, great, and has helped me so much. She gets five stars. This is about billing. They will not bill my insurance and I’ve sent my information to them multiple times. I ended up disputing charges with my credit card because I was over paying since they didn’t do what they were supposed to. I got an email saying that if I didn’t pay the outstanding balance by 1pm that day (the email was sent at 8:30 am while I was at work) I would be turned over to collections. I’m so angry due to this being their issue that they were made aware over multiple times. I’ve texted them my insurance card twice and they seem to not update things.

    Kylie Jo Rutherford, Google Review

I’m deeply disappointed with the Kentucky Counseling Center. My main issue is their outrageous $75 missed appointment fee. Life happens—especially for those of us already struggling with mental health—and penalizing clients this harshly is not only inconsiderate, it’s actively harmful. This kind of policy discourages the most vulnerable people from seeking the help they need. After being charged this fee multiple times, my family and I have chosen to stop seeking counseling through them altogether. Mental health care should be accessible and compassionate—not financially punishing. Very disappointed.
