Emergency Veterinary & Specialty Services of Roanoke has been serving the pets of Roanoke and the greater Southwest Virginia region as a dedicated 24-hour emergency animal hospital. Unlike traditional veterinary practices that focus on wellness and routine care, this facility specializes exclusively in urgent, emergency, and critical care situations — the cases that can't wait until morning or require advanced intervention beyond what a primary care vet can provide. Their team of emergency veterinarians and veterinary surgeons is trained to handle everything from traumatic injuries and acute illnesses to toxin ingestion and life-threatening conditions.
The hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art in-house diagnostic technology, including digital radiography, ultrasound, laboratory equipment, and advanced monitoring systems, enabling the team to perform rapid assessments and make critical treatment decisions without delay. Their surgical suite is staffed 24/7 with experienced veterinary surgeons who can perform emergency procedures ranging from foreign body removal and wound repair to life-saving abdominal and thoracic surgeries. This level of around-the-clock capability makes them the go-to emergency vet in Roanoke for cases that require immediate hospitalization, intensive care, or surgical intervention.
In addition to emergency and critical care services, Emergency Veterinary & Specialty Services of Roanoke offers compassionate at-home end-of-life care for pets whose families prefer a peaceful, familiar environment for their final moments. The team understands that veterinary emergencies are stressful and emotional for pet owners, and they prioritize clear communication, empathy, and support throughout the treatment process. They work closely with primary care veterinarians in the region, accepting referrals for complex cases and ensuring seamless continuity of care once the emergency has been resolved.
The facility operates 365 days a year with no appointments necessary — pet owners can call ahead or walk in when an emergency arises. Their dedicated staff includes emergency veterinarians, certified veterinary technicians, and support personnel who share a genuine passion for animal care and a commitment to being there when pets and their families need help most. Whether it's a middle-of-the-night crisis or a holiday emergency, this hospital is a reliable resource for urgent veterinary care in the Roanoke Valley and beyond.

What types of emergencies does this hospital treat?
Emergency Veterinary & Specialty Services of Roanoke specializes in urgent and critical care situations including trauma (hit by car, falls, fights), acute illnesses (vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing), toxin ingestion, bloat, urinary blockages, severe infections, seizures, allergic reactions, and any life-threatening condition requiring immediate intervention. They also perform emergency surgeries such as foreign body removal, wound repair, and abdominal/thoracic procedures. For routine wellness care, vaccinations, and non-urgent conditions, they recommend contacting your primary veterinarian during regular business hours.
How much does emergency veterinary care cost?
Emergency veterinary care costs vary widely depending on the severity of the condition, diagnostics required, treatments performed, and whether surgery or hospitalization is needed. A basic emergency exam typically starts around $150-$200, with additional costs for diagnostics (bloodwork, X-rays, ultrasound), medications, IV fluids, surgery, and overnight critical care. Emergency hospitals generally cost more than routine vet visits due to 24/7 staffing and advanced equipment. The team at Emergency Veterinary & Specialty Services will provide an estimate before beginning treatment whenever possible, and they accept multiple payment options including pet insurance, CareCredit, and major credit cards.
Do I need an appointment or can I just come in?
No appointment is necessary. Emergency Veterinary & Specialty Services of Roanoke operates as a walk-in emergency hospital — you can call ahead at (540) 417-1530 to let them know you're coming, or simply arrive with your pet. They offer an online check-in form on their website to pre-register before arrival, which can help speed up the intake process. Emergency cases are triaged based on severity, so the most critical patients are seen first. If your pet's condition is stable, you may experience a wait during busy times.
Can this hospital provide ongoing care after the emergency is resolved?
Emergency Veterinary & Specialty Services focuses exclusively on urgent and critical care, not ongoing routine care. Once your pet's emergency has been stabilized and treated, they will work with your primary care veterinarian to ensure a smooth transition and continuity of care. They send detailed medical records and discharge instructions to your regular vet for follow-up. If you don't have a primary vet, they can provide recommendations for local clinics that can take over routine care, monitoring, and long-term management.
What should I do if my pet has an emergency after hours?
Call Emergency Veterinary & Specialty Services of Roanoke immediately at (540) 417-1530. The hospital is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays, with emergency veterinarians and support staff on-site at all times — not on-call. If your pet is experiencing a life-threatening emergency (difficulty breathing, profuse bleeding, seizures, inability to stand, severe trauma), head to the hospital right away at 5363 Peters Creek Rd in Roanoke while calling en route. The team will provide guidance over the phone if needed and prepare for your arrival.
Does this hospital accept pet insurance?
Yes, Emergency Veterinary & Specialty Services of Roanoke accepts all major pet insurance providers. Pet owners are responsible for payment at the time of service, and the hospital will provide detailed itemized invoices and medical records that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. They also accept CareCredit and other financing options to help manage emergency care costs. It's recommended to check your pet insurance policy's coverage for emergency care, surgery, and hospitalization before an emergency occurs.
What is at-home end-of-life care and how does it work?
At-home end-of-life care, also called at-home euthanasia, allows your pet to pass peacefully in the comfort and familiarity of their own home rather than in a clinical setting. A veterinarian from Emergency Veterinary & Specialty Services will come to your home, discuss the process with you, and provide compassionate sedation followed by humane euthanasia. This service is ideal for families who want a private, quiet, and dignified farewell for their beloved pet. To arrange at-home end-of-life care, call (540) 417-1530 to speak with the team and schedule a time that works for your family.
What makes this hospital different from my regular vet?
Emergency Veterinary & Specialty Services of Roanoke specializes exclusively in emergency and critical care, with veterinarians trained in emergency medicine and surgery, 24/7 on-site staffing, advanced in-house diagnostics, and critical care hospitalization capabilities that most general practice vets don't have. Your regular veterinarian focuses on preventive care, wellness exams, vaccinations, and routine treatments during business hours. This emergency hospital is designed for urgent, life-threatening, and after-hours situations that require immediate expert intervention. They work collaboratively with primary care vets, accepting referrals and sending patients back for follow-up care once the crisis has passed.

“My husband and I were very pleased with the care our cat received and appreciated all the kindness they put into making sure he was well taken care of. Doctor Brittany Ciepluch, the surgeon who performed our cats PU surgery was amazing! Great communication, caring and positive attitude, and incredibly knowledgeable. The technician who handled our discharge did a fantastic job of explaining everything post-op and went the extra mile to confirm medication times before we left with him. What I appreciated most is the amazing care from Doctor Brittany Ciepluch. Hands down. She did a terrific job of making us feel comfortable with her caring for our cat and she was also very genuine and caring. We could not have asked for a better experience and our sweet boy is doing fantastic!”

“I cannot thank Emergency Veterinary and Specialty Services enough for what they did for my pets after a terrible car accident. I was rear-ended on Highway 81 and taken to the hospital, leaving my dog Gator and cat Simone in the care of this clinic. It was one of the scariest moments of my life, but the staff here truly saved us. My dog had internal bleeding, and thanks to their quick action and incredible care, he pulled through after several days of treatment. The veterinarians and staff were compassionate, attentive, and thorough, keeping me informed and making sure both of my pets were safe and comfortable during such a traumatic time. I don’t know how they survived the accident, but I do know that this clinic gave them the best possible chance. Today both Gator and Simone are healthy and recovering, and I will be forever grateful for the kindness and professionalism of everyone who helped us. Highly recommend this clinic to anyone in need of emergency care. They truly go above and beyond.”

“Very helpful and quick in our emergency situation. Assessed everything in a timely manner and with care. Very kind to me during the whole process too, which helped a lot. I don't remember any names but there was one young woman in particular with glasses and short hair that checked us in. She was so kind and helpful and went the extra mile to help me specifically during this time. She got me water, checked on me, kept me updated and brought my dog to me so I could see her before having to leave her overnight. She assured me they would all take good care of my dog and I believe they did. They told me how sweet my dog is and she just likes to be held, which is true. My dog seemed more at ease when I picked her up as opposed to when I left her, so I appreciate that a lot. Thank you so much!”

“I’m a former vet assistant who seen and experienced a lot with fur babies and humans. These ladies were so kind, so soft, and genuine. We had a horrific thing happen to our baby tigger. We called the number and a kind voice asked what was going on, after listening to the details told us to come in being upfront about possible wait time before we even arrived. They were up front with prices first thing. From the time they carried tigger to the back to the moment they kindly reassured our heartbreaking choice to say goodbye for now, felt like a blink of an eye in a calm and peaceful way. As a former vet assistant I was in awe of the office, it’s very large and vast but is still warm and comforting. The room where we said goodbye to our funny little orange gremlin had wonderful products that you could use for the afterlife home for your baby. It had a large couch to cuddle with your little heart stealer. It was not sterile feeling but it was also not a room that you will probably find yourself in outside of the situation so you won’t be triggered by the feeling or sight of it. wish I could have seen the workplace in the back as a working person. Thank you for helping our last moments together be peaceful. Also the pricing was so shocking! Where I worked an emergency visit, diagnosis and care would have been triple what we paid. It was less than $300, but at my previous clinic in a non emergency event would have been at least double that.”
